About the Artist

Yari Ostovany is an Iranian-born American abstract artist. He creates richly textured, layered abstract paintings that explore processes of metamorphosis. He has lived in Tehran, Cologne, Los Angeles, Reno, New York, and is currently based in the San Francisco. Works by Ostovany are included in many private collections around the world, as well as the collections of the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut, the Pasargad Bank Museum in Tehran and the Collection of the Art Department of the University of Nevada, Reno.

Ostavany's artistic journey delves into the mystical and enigmatic, finding resonance in the spiritual realm through a process-driven, improvisational approach to painting. Ostovany feels a connection to multiple separate and yet complementary mystical traditions. He looks toward elements of Western and Eastern art, literature, spirituality, poetry and music to create an environment and a mindset conducive to his process, which is connected to Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting.

Through densely layered compositions, Ostavany navigates the interplay of contradictory forces allowing forms to emerge and dissolve organically. His paintings usually begin with a sequence of calligraphic gestural strokes, inspired by energetic, cathartic outbursts and evolve with depth. Central to Ostavany's practice is the dichotomy of light and gravity, seeking to capture Lux Æterna — a self-generating spiritual energy. Painting becomes a translation of psychic experience into tangible light and texture, blurring the lines between stasis and movement, emergence and disappearance.

Inspired by cognitive and emotional sparks, each series originates from a profound inner experience, blending intellect with intuition to evoke liminal states of being. Through a process akin to psychic geology, Ostavany's work archives fragments of memory, unveiling ephemeral forms that speak to interior truths. In Ostavany's abstraction, representation lies not in external reality but in the portrayal of psychic states. Rooted in diverse artistic traditions from Abstract Expressionism to Persian and Taoist/Zen aesthetics, Ostavany's work traverses visionary paths of wisdom, connecting to a greater energy through the transformative power of paint and presents to you soulful, abstract expression for your collection.
